Google Panda 4.0: What You Need to Know

Google’s Panda algorithm, created in 2011, was designed to stop low-quality sites from ranking high in search results. When first released, it impacted 11.8% of English queries. Google later updated Panda so frequently that they stopped announcing each refresh.

That changed in May 2014 when Google released Panda 4.0. This version penalized websites without original content. Aggregator websites, press release portals, and news sites that republished content were hit the hardest. Price comparison sites also saw major visibility drops.

How Panda Works

Google’s ranking system uses many factors to rank a page. These include the words on a page, images, site speed, and spelling. It also looks at websites linking to the page and how users interact with it. The quality of these inbound links matters too.

Panda rewards websites with high-quality, original, and focused content. It lowers the rank of sites with thin, duplicate, or spam-like user-generated content.

Who Was Affected by Panda 4.0?

SearchEngine Land reported that some sites dropped 60–70% in SEO visibility. These included:

  • PRNewsWire.com
  • PRWeb.com
  • BusinessWire.com
  • PRLog.org

Yellowpages.com also saw a 20% decrease.

Tips to Avoid Panda Penalties

Matt Cutts, from Google, advised:

“If you think you might be affected by Panda, the overriding kind of goal is to try to make sure that you’ve got high-quality content, the sort of content that people really enjoy, that’s compelling, the sort of thing that they’ll love to read that you might see in a magazine or in a book, and that people would refer back to, or send friends to, those sorts of things.”
